Saint Louis County increased commercial property taxes drastically at an unfortunate time for many business owners in the region. The increases follow a residential property tax in the last year that left homeowners hurting financially, many were concerned about elderly neighbors and younger folks just starting out and living on fixed incomes.
The businesses that are being hit with this steep increase are suffering from poor planning and lack of support from the County Commissioners. Now, due to COVID-19, when commercial property and business owners are not able to make payroll and rent due to lack of revenue streams they are saddled with another giant bill.
The lack of foresight or even simple compassion demonstrated by our County Commissioner’s is disheartening. One commissioner was quoted in the Star Tribune as not wanting to hear complaints because “they’ve been getting deal” for a long time. The current Commission is failing to demonstrate they have any foresight or leadership.
